Siddhartha Gautama, known as Buddha, was born as a prince in Lumbini, Nepal, in the 5th or 6th century BCE. Discouraged by suffering and death, he renounced his luxurious life at age 29 to seek enlightenment. After attaining insights through meditation under the Bodhi tree, he formed the basic principles of Buddhism.
